According to Pt. Ratnakar Shastri,

Deity or Devata is the power or energy.
Devata is a formulae or constituent factor of the things.
In Science it is Abstract Noun.
In History it is Common Noun.
In Jyotish it is Collective Noun.
In Ayurved it is Phenomenon Noun.

The discovery,contemplation and endeavour of the phenomenon or formulae of the substance is nothing but Devpuja or Worship of the deity.
